Well, it was bound to happen; Judith has her second cold. I was thinking we were going to be fortunate and get through the first year with only one cold, but alas, it was not to be. Now we know why she has been so fussy over the past several days. We had chalked it up to teething (which the second tooth on the top in the middle has finally come in), but I guess there was a lot more to it.
The poor thing is very congested and just not her normal playful and happy self. It is so sad to hear her coughing and wheezing and sneezing! However, this picture was taken in the midst of it all, and she is still able to take delight in emptying Mommy and Daddy’s cabinets, so all is not lost!
Robert did manage to find a new filter for our cool mist humidifier (which hasn’t come out of the box since we moved here) which helped her to sleep a little better over night and actually take a morning nap. During the day she’s getting saline nasal spray and the bulb syringe treatment. She HATES them both! And she’s not at all happy with me for using them. But they do help a great deal!
And thank the Lord for Aquiphor. Our all purpose ointment for her not only works with diaper changes, but is fabulous around her nose to prevent it from getting all red and sore from her sneezing.
She has also been coughing a bit over the last few days. We noticed it, but didn’t think much of it. (Actually, I’ve been of the opinion for a while that she has allergies. Allergies aren’t officially diagnosed on a child until at least two years of age. But I’ve been more congested than normal because of the alfalfa cutting that’s going on in the fields all around us, and I figured the same thing was bothering her. Obviously I jumped to the wrong conclusions.) But we can’t give her any medicine for cough or cold anyway. You don’t want to suppress the cough because that clears the mucus out of the lungs, and decongestants would leave her nasal passages far too dry and painful for her to deal with at this age. So we wait it out.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s an unhappy baby who isn’t sleeping well through the night for a few nights. It could be a LOT worse. And again, this is only the second time she’s ever been sick with anything. So we have nothing to complain about. And so long as she flashes her fabulous smiles every now and then, all is well.
Anyway, we hope you are all having an illness free start to June!
