Five Months Old Already

As many of you have noticed, we are late with this week's edition of our Chronicle. It is the week of Robert's big conference and driving him to the train station and picking him up from the train station is taking 3 to 3 1/2 hours of each day, so free time for blogging is minimal, but we'll make a go of it.

Yes - Judith was five months old yesterday! We cannot believe it. The change in her over the last few months is remarkable - personality galore! Each day she is cuter and more endearing. And each day she's understanding and communicating more. It'll still be a bit before words come, but we are very excited that it is coming.

No, there are no teeth yet. However, she is furiously rubbing her tongue over her gums throughout the day, so we're thinking that it is getting closer. She is even chewing on a teether that we picked up for her this weekend.

And Judith's first holiday season is quickly approaching. We will have Thanksgiving dinner at home and will join our neighbors for dessert. It should be a good time if Robert can stay healthy (which isn't generally the case for Thanksgiving, but we have our fingers crossed). Then we'll have the fun of trying to put up all the Christmas decorations with a child who HATES to be put down. We tell her that some things (like using knives or the stove) require Mommy and Daddy to use two hands and therefore not hold her, but she really doesn't care for such logic at this point. But the lights and the new items to feel and play with should be exciting to her - especially since it will correspond about exactly to when she'll start moving a bit on her own.

At this point she can push herself up on her hands and knees, but then falls back down flat when she tries to move. She's frustrated, but doing so much better than she was even a week ago. Once she gets going, there will be no stopping her. So we are quite grateful for her final days of putting her down and knowing where she is when we come back!

During our walk with our neighbor on Monday we were caught in the rain. It was just a little mist at first but then became fairly intense and steady. We were 15 minutes from home moving at a good clip (which we did). Judith loved the rain! She laughed and smiled and kept looking up at the water falling on her. She was quite enthralled with the entire experience. It was fun to witness. Of course, when we arrived at the house she realized she was cold and wet and was suddenly EXTREMELY unhappy, but a warm bath and warm clothes solved that problem fairly quickly.

In general, we are in the rainy season now. It is in the mid-60 degree range. We also had our first taste of morning fog this morning. It was not that bad - it will certainly get worse between now and mid-February. But because we have been having rain, the brown hills are beginning to turn just the slightest bit green. It was a remarkable thing to see last year, and we are looking forward to it this year as well. It is a bit backward from what we are used to. In the midwest, winter means things are brown and dormant and summer means things are lush and green. Here, things are green and lush in the winter, because that's when we actually have rain, and brown and dead looking in the summer. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it.

Robert's conference is going well. There are several recruiters who are interested in him. He'll apply for the jobs, we'll see if there are any offers, and then determine what to do next from there. We know God will lead us to where we are supposed to be if we are patient and prayerful and if we listen. That's all challenging when we want an answer immediately, but in the grand scheme of things, a few more months of things being up in the air is not that bad. We just keep reminding ourselves that so long as we have each other and Judith, we'll be fine. We want to be closer to all of the family, but that will come when it comes. In the meantime, we are so grateful that so many are taking the time to come and see us over the next five months. It's very exciting! Hopefully by some of the visits Judith will be crawling around and standing up!
